About 30% of land area is covered by forests, which produce many resources that are used in our daily lives while also supplying homes for many organisms. However, forests are threatened by deforestation : the act of clearing trees.
Approximately 46-58 thousand square miles of forest is lost per year- about 48 football fields each minute. Deforestation is becoming increasingly worrisome in tropical rainforests, especially neaar urban areas. The Amazon Rainforest has lost around 17% of its trees in just the past 50 years. At this rate, in a hundred years there may be no more rainforests.
